PARKER RANCH FOUNDATION TRUST DISTRIBUTES $375,000 TO TRUST BENEFICIARIES

RICHARD SMART’S LEGACY CONTINUES TO BENEFIT COMMUNITY

Waimea, Big Island of Hawaii ~ Trustees of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust announced today a $375,000 cash distribution to its trust beneficiaries. This distribution is in addition to $1,651,000 in cash and land distributed to North Hawaii Community Hospital, Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Parker School Trust Corporation and the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Richard Smart Fund earlier this year.

The most recent distributions included:

¨ Hawaii Community Foundation’s Richard Smart Fund $235,390

¨ North Hawaii Community Hospital $92,365

¨ Hawaii Preparatory Academy $23,622

¨ Parker School Trust Corporation $23,622

“Richard Smart established a trust upon his death in 1992 that focused on four Waimea charitable institutions. The entire Parker Ranch ohana has worked diligently this year to provide this additional distribution from the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust to its designated beneficiaries. I’m thankful all of us at Parker Ranch can be a part of the improved quality of life in this community provided through the work of the North Hawaii Community Hospital, Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Parker School Trust Corporation and Hawaii Community Foundation’s Richard Smart Fund, ” stated Mel Hewett, Parker Ranch trustee. “Richard Smart’s legacy is reflected in the donations to these organizations that benefit the Waimea community in many ways for years to come.”

Recent distributions include $1,301,000 in land that was deeded to North Hawaii Community Hospital, $347,135 in cash that was awarded to the Richard Smart Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation, $2,865 in cash and $425,000 in land awarded to Hawaii Preparatory Academy and $425,000 in land awarded to the Parker School Trust Corporation.

Since 1996, the beneficiaries have received the following in cash and land from the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust: Hawaii Preparatory Academy $635,487, Parker School Trust Corporation $632,622, North Hawaii Community Hospital/Lucy Henriques Medical Center $1,945,950 and Hawaii Community Foundation’s Richard Smart Fund $812,525.

Hawaii Community Foundation’s Richard Smart Fund

The Richard Smart Fund is a component of the Hawaii Community Foundation and is supported by income from the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust. Richard Smart created the fund to support health care, educational and charitable purposes that improve the general welfare and quality of life for the people of the Kamuela area.

The Richard Smart Fund supports the building of social capital and organizational effectiveness in the Waimea area. This grant-making fund encourages social capital projects that promote volunteerism, community building and civic engagement among community groups. The fund also supports projects that strengthen organizational infrastructures, internal management and board governance of nonprofits. North Hawaii Community Hospital

North Hawaii Community Hospital (NHCH) in Waimea is an award-winning full-service, acute-care hospital that is licensed for 50 beds. Governed by a local board of directors, NHCH also has a management agreement with Adventist Health of Roseville, California. Opened in May 1996, NHCH serves the 30,000 plus residents and visitors of the northern region of the Big Island. Hawaii Preparatory Academy

Founded in 1949, Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) is one of the premier independent, co-educational college-preparatory boarding and day schools in the Pacific Region offering a full range of academic and extracurricular opportunities for more than 600 students in grades K-12. The school offers a boarding option for students in grades 9-12, and draws its diverse student body from the Hawaiian Islands, 11 other states, American Samoa, Palau, the Marshall Islands, and 11 other countries. Parker School Trust Corporation

The Parker School Trust was established by Richard Smart in 1978 to provide for private education in North Hawaii. During Mr. Smart’s lifetime Parker School developed both secondary and adult educational programs. The Trust supports Parker School’s community based board of directors and supports and administers Waimea Community Education, the adult education program.

Parker School is an independent, college-preparatory day school serving students in grades 6-12. Located in the heart of Waimea, Parker strives for personal excellence in the classroom and on the athletic field. Students enjoy small class sizes and individualized attention in a “family atmosphere.” Parker integrates community services and physical challenges into its curriculum and focuses on developing personal character, teaching values, and providing an awareness of the world.

Parker Ranch is one of the largest ranches in the United States, spanning over 175,000 acres across Hawaii’s Big Island. It surrounds the town of Waimea and spreads between the Kohala and Mauna Kea mountains.
